During your business journey you must have heard quite a number of times that to grow your business to success while using social media as a tool, you need to niche down.
A “niche” simply refers to your field of business endeavour.
The advice to “niche down” is simply suggesting that you find a specific area of specialization instead of doing everything at once.
1) This does not mean or imply in any way that you should do only one type of business in contrast to how the term “niching down” has been misunderstood to connote.
2) What this means is that you should separate your niches on social media and your website. But you can do as many businesses as you want provided you separate their online presence.
For example, as you can confirm on my Instagram bio on my personal account, I have multiple jobs, but there’s something I once did, and that’s to separate each job and fix them in a totally different Instagram account, but I was still doing all the jobs and they’re interlinked. I was transparent enough to let everyone know that I own and run all these businesses. I also did the same on my websites, I separated all these subjects. This was because I knew and understood that I did not need to have only one job in my life to be able to be seen as an expert or authority in any field of my choice.
The truth is that if I wrote on every topic under the earth on one social media account or website, it’ll make it difficult for that particular account to be categorised under one particular field. If it’s a website, Google will be confused on how to categorise my website. But if it’s on social media like Instagram and YouTube, the algorithms of these social media spaces will find it difficult to know under which field my account should be categorised.
The end result of using the same account for different topics is that “you’ll not have as much reach as you should”, and that in turn means that “you’ll take longer time to grow your website or social media account” or you might want to use some quick boost such as paid advertising or becoming popular as a public figure first.
This is because:
1) using only one niche per account helps you build authority in that niche and clearly informs your host and visitors about what that account or website is exactly for.
2) not being transparent about how you run your business and which business you run erodes customers’ trust in you. This is a little tricky though, because for me after rebranding, I no longer saw myself as a relationship expert or a business expert even though I still had all the skills intact (in fact, that’s the reason I’m able to write on so many topics with authority, because yes, I’ve got the experience and understanding of what I’m writing about!), instead I now see myself as only “a writing expert”, but specifically a “diverse writer”, that is, a writer who has the talent to be dynamic in my field and tone of writing. That was the idea that birthed one of my previous websites’ design that was completed this December 24th 2023, I had to republish all my previous posts from 2 years ago (from that time) all on this one website.
There are three ways to niche down:
1) Locating a specific field instead of doing everything at once in the same space (same website, YouTube channel, Instagram handle, etc).
For example, if you’re locating a specific field, it’d be something like “choosing ‘lifestyle’, ‘relationship’, ‘beauty’ or ‘health’ as a topic”. This means that you’re open to talking about any subject from any of these fields.
For example, on my former personal Instagram account I specialised on “relationships”, I talked about single men and women, couples and parents. But my major topic of interest under any of these was “how to create a better relationship”. In a more specific way, the purpose for the singles is “how to find true love and commitment”, while my purpose for couples and families is “how to foster unity in a home by connecting families in a closer emotional bond”.
If you look at it this way, I still had a specific topic anyway, because there’s a particular clear purpose behind joining them all together.
I didn’t talk about everything under relationships since I clearly didn’t talk about working environment, political relationships, children’s communication with parents, relationship with pets, etc.
However, my specialization on it’s own was already too broad because I talked about more than one subject. But that’s fine since it’s all under the same field.
2) Finding a specific topic of interest under a specific field.
This is just going a step or two further from the main field of endeavour.
For example, on the blog area of my previous business website, I wrote about businesses.
However, my major interest was on “entrepreneurship” and “forming a new business and social media account”.
This means that if you’re already well-grounded in business, or if you’ve passed that initial setup stage where each one of us usually experience confusion, then this blog back then would not exactly be the best fit for you. It doesn’t mean that you wouldn’t have learned anything new here, but it wasn’t exactly where I’d force you to be.
3) Finding a more specific topic under a specific topic.
Before I settled on the niche “diverse writing” this 2023 and moved all my topics and posts to this one website and rebranded and redesigned my entire career, I had a specific blog where I wrote only about “grief” as a field of endeavour. However, I niched down to “grief relief” as subject. I didn’t stop there, I went further and specialized on “death of a deeply loved one”.
This means that my blog wouldn’t exactly be the perfect fit for you if the deceased wasn’t someone you deeply loved, or if the reason for your grief isn’t “death” in the first place.
However, I created a platform on the website back then where you can meet individuals with similar interests as you as long as it was all about grief, but any type of grief, that’s the only environment on my website where you ‘might’ meet topics other than “death of a deeply loved one”.
That’s because on the discussion platform, I permitted people to pour out their heart even if it wasn’t related to my blog’s values. But the blog itself has a specific and extremely narrow niche which was as stated above “death of a deeply loved one”.
So there you have it, the different ways of niching down. If you liked the post, feel free to follow this business on Instagram, Facebook , Tiktok, YouTube, and X (Twitter).
See you another time. Bye!
